BROADWAY WORLD
Review: THE SOAP MYTH
The Soap Myth by Jeff Cohen is probably one of the most important pieces of theatre, an intense and affecting play expertly directed by the incomparable Harris Yulin.
All I can really say is get your tickets now, folks.
The cast is extraordinary.
Maddie Rubin excellently portrays Annie Blumberg, the story's narrator - who helps Holocaust survivor Milton Saltzman, brilliantly portrayed Tony nominee Bob Gunton, get the atrocity of Soap displayed in Holocaust museums. It is thrilling to see Mr. Gunton back on the stage. Milton is fiercely adamant that this soap is made from the bodies of those murdered in the Holocaust. In the course of the investigation, Annie is soon caught between Saltzman and the position of scholars who fear publishing anything related to soap as fact without corroboration could embolden Holocaust deniers.
Rounding out the astonishing cast is a brilliant performance by Tony and Drama Desk Award winner John Rubinstein and the great Carolyn McCormick. No wonder the engaged audience gave a well deserved standing ovation in the end. You'll also find an involved audience at the talk-backs after the performance. On Mr. Yulin's superb creative team is set designer Andrew Boyce, Tony nominated lighting designer Dennis Parichy, and costume designer Krista Pineman. Mr. Boyce's set for the intimate Long Island venue is brilliantly minimal; a few chairs that are arranged around the stage throughout the show. This allows the story and the actors' fierce delivery to take center stage leaving the audience truly shaken.
The Soap Myth is definitely a must see this season. This is an incredible piece that educates you and leaves you spellbound. A gripping story and this incredible cast make for an emotional night of theatre.

"Bob Gunton is the driving force of this production as he portrays Milton Saltzman, a holocaust survivor. Mr. Gunton is superb at being the force to be reckoned with and a man on a most important mission. His performance is alone worth the price of the ticket.

ABOUT JEFF COHEN’S “THE SOAP MYTH”
Jeff Cohen’s drama is considered one of the most important plays about the Holocaust by the foremost Holocaust historians in the world. The play directly engages one of the central issues of our time – Who has the right to write history? Fifty years after the end of World War II a passionate Holocaust survivor and a young journalist find themselves caught between numerous versions of the same story: Did the Nazis make soap from the corpses of their murdered victims? The play confronts the dangerous rise of anti-Semitism and exposes the pernicious scourge of Holocaust denial. Ultimately, The Soap Myth is a call to action: as the survivors of the Holocaust die off, who will be left to tell their story?
After a critically acclaimed Off Broadway run at the Roundabout Black Box in 2012, The Soap Myth toured the U.S. as a staged “concert reading” featuring such highly acclaimed, award winning actors as Ed Asner, Richard Dreyfuss, Harris Yulin, Tovah Feldshuh, Jayne Atkinson and Johanna Day.
